An Agile Culture

Real Life ALC Tampa is an independent school for self-directed learners. By harnessing powerful tools for self-organization and intentional culture creation, our students deeply engage with the world through their passions and strengths. Our learning environment embraces choice & freedom along with collaboration between peers, teachers, and the local community.

Self-Directed: Humans are natural learners. When children get to follow their passions, they engage deeply, learning more quickly, and create organically.

Intentional Culture: At ALCs, children feel they are heard, they belong, and they make a difference. As social creatures, we thrive in this kind of vibrant community which builds our confidence, heightens our communication skills, and calls forth our best selves.

Agile Management Tools: At Real Life ALC Tampa, we use practical and concrete tools to make our lofty-sounding ideals real and reliable. These tools and practices provide visible feedback, effective self-management, clarity of purpose, and easy integration of new patterns as needs change.

The Agile Roots

1. Learning: Learning is natural & is happening all the time

2. Self-Direction: People learn best by making their own decisions. Children are people.

3. Experience: People learn more from their culture and environment than from the content they are taught. The medium is the message.

4. Growth: Personal growth is achieved through cycles of intention, creation, reflection and sharing.

The Agile Cycle of Learning

Intention

What do you want to accomplish today?

At Agile Learning Centers, we discern and articulate what we want to do, individually and as a group.

Creation

What are you going to do about it?

Agile Learners spend their days exploring and inventing – once we know what we want, we create it.

Reflection

What did you learn from your choices?

Looking back, we develop awareness of what worked and what didn’t, so we can move forward more powerfully.

Sharing

How can you share it with the world?

We document our work to record, exhibit, and share our experience with others.

At Real Life ALC Tampa, we prepare young people for the world they are growing up into by empowering them to actively create it.

We use leading edge tools and culture creation practices to provide students with the maximal support with minimal interference.

At Real Life ALC Tampa, we are active collaborators in the ALC Network. We aren’t in this game alone! Check out the growing network of ALCs.
